The School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is presenting the [RE]CONNECT: Post-Modern Documentary Photography Exhibition at the School’s ADM Gallery 2 from 20 November to 20 December 2014.
Documentary photography has undergone changes in the last three decades as it has become increasingly appropriated into the art world. Imagery that once used to illustrate pages in journals now often hangs on gallery walls. Many people have questioned whether this signifies a new path for documentary photography, and to what extent it can still function effectively in this new domain. As photography entered into the 21st century, the advent of digital technology completely changed the philosophy of construction of documentary photography. The common use of digital technology has increased awareness of how easy it is to manipulate documentary images. With this manipulation, new genres of documentary imagery have increased confusion as to how we define documentary photography.
The exhibition features selected works from 10 leading artists in the field of contemporary documentary photography: Min Kim Park, Oh Soon-Hwa, Jesvin Yeo, Nate Larson, Julia Cybularz, Regina Mamou, Joe Johnson, Lynn Lee, Billie Mandle and Lee Dong Jun. Their work focuses on finding new ways to portray 'truth' through photography, exploring new subject matter in unique locations, confronting societal expectations and social norms, and discovering new ways of enhancing documentary photography in the digital age.
This exhibition was first held at Purdue University's Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries from 22 September to 11 October 2014 as part of the Postmodern Documentary Photography Symposium organised by Assistant Professor Min Kim Park at Purdue University, and co-developed in collaboration with Associate Professor Oh Soon-Hwa, Coordinator of the Photography and Digital Imaging Programme at NTU’s School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM) in Singapore. After the symposium at Purdue University in the United States, the exhibition travelled to Syo Gallery in South Korea from 1 – 31 October 2014, and it has finally arrived to the ADM Gallery at NTU.
