Investigating the social, geographical and political dimensions of conflict, the exhibition features contemporary artists whose works address and reflect on the tensions that emerge from societal ruptures, ranging from urban disruptions to violence and war.
Showcasing artistic responses to some of the most contentious crises in the past decade by artists from China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Japan and Pakistan, The Art of Conflict highlights how video has increasingly become a critical medium in portraying the immediacies and complexities of confrontational issues, both past and present.
In times of conflict, art can provide renewed perspectives that may incite meaningful change and transformation. Through diverse strategies of art-making that concurrently engage with the other themes of gender, history and memory, the artists in the exhibition also highlight the potential of art-making as acts of creative activism and resistance that explore how and why conflicts affect society and humanity, as well as their consequences.
The Art of Conflict: Video Works from the Asia Society Museum Collection is organised by the Asia Society Museum, New York, drawing from the Asia Society Museum Collection.
