Criteria for QET Exemption
Unless granted exemption, students admitted to undergraduate courses of study in NTU are required to take the Qualifying English Test (QET), which determines whether they take Introduction to Academic Communication (HW0001) as a subject of study.
Students are exempted from the QET if they present any of the following:
1. | General Paper of the Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examination (sat in 2007 onwards): A, B, C, D, E |
2. | General Paper of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'A’ Level Examination (sat in 2006 or earlier): A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6 |
3. | Knowledge and Inquiry of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'A' Level Examination: A, B, C, D, E, S |
4. | English Language of the Singapore Cambridge GCE 'O' Level Examination (for Polytechnic graduates only): A1, A2, B3, B4 |
5. | IELTS: a minimum of 6 for the Writing sub-test |
6. | TOEFL: a minimum of 570 and above (PBT) or 90 and above (IBT) |
7. | SAT1: a minimum of 600 for the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing/Writing/Verbal section or 7 (SAT taken before 2016) for the Essay section |
8. | IB: a minimum of grade 4 for Literature and Performance (in English) (at Standard Level) |
9. | IB: a minimum of grade 4 for English A: Language and Literature, or English A: Literature (at Standard Level or Higher Level) |
10. | IB: a minimum of grade 4 for English B at Higher Level, or a minimum of grade 6 for English B at Standard Level |
11. | IB: English A1 or English A2 (at Standard Level or Higher Level) |
12. | NUS High School: an overall CAP of 2.5 in English Language |
13. | MUET (Malaysian University English Test): Band 4.5 and aggregate score of 258; Writing component, a score of at least 65 out of 90 marks. |
14. | LPI (Language Proficiency Index): a minimum of Level 5 |
15. | TEE (Tertiary Entrance Exam): a minimum of Grade C for English (3A/3B) |
16. | India Standard XII: a minimum of 60% for English |
17. | Pearson Test of English (Academic): a minimum of 59 for communicative skills in writing |
Request for Exemption
- If you have obtained any improved grade in your second attempt of GCE 'A' Level General Paper or GCE 'O' Level English Language, (i.e. after the admission exercise in April), please submit the documentary proof of the results by Friday, 2 August 2024, failing which you will have to sit for the QET.

* Please note that IELTS and TOEFL results are only valid for 2 years from the date of the test of IELTS and TOEFL.
* All other qualifications obtained that are not indicated in the above list will not be accepted.
Leave of Absence
If you are unable to take the test on the test date indicated, you must seek formal leave of absence in writing via [email protected] with documentary support.
Students with approved leave of absence will be scheduled to sit for the next QET conducted.
You will be deemed to have failed QET if you are absent from the test without approved leave of absence and will be required to take Introduction to Academic Communication (HW0001) as a subject of study.
