2024 Maritime RobotX Challenge
Name of the competition : 2024 Maritime RobotX Challenge
About the competition : The Maritime RobotX Challenge is a biennial international competition hosted by RoboNation and was established to foster student interest in robotic and autonomous systems operating within the maritime environment. RobotX challenges teams to document, design, and transform the Wave Adaptive Modular-Vessel (WAM-V) into an autonomous robotic system, developing and integrating an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) and an Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to accomplish a series of real-world tasks. This year, the competition was held in Sarasota, Florida with 15 university teams from around the world showcasing their Autonomous Maritime Systems (AMS) that they have developed to autonomously tackle the competition tasks.
Date of the competition : 3 – 9 November 2024
Achievement : 5th Place in Autonomy Challenge
Prize : USD$4,000 cash prize
REP Student/s : Darren Suen Wei Jie, Wong Rui Yue
Product/Proposal: Archimedes AMS, consisting of the Archimedes ASV and the Archimedes UAV
Description : As part of the Archimedes Autonomous Vehicles team, Darren (Team Lead, UAV member) and Rui Yue (Planning member) were involved in the development of the team’s ASV and UAV to autonomously conduct various maritime operational tasks, ranging from heartbeat message communication to marine navigation to search and report missions. During the competition, the team’s AMS successfully completed 6 out of 8 of the competition tasks in the qualifiers, clinching one of the remaining spots in the Finals during the Wild Card Challenge, and completing the Autonomy Challenge in 5th place.
