Object Lessons ++
Designed for first year ADM BFA students, Object Lessons ++ will involve a series of workshops looking into art, design, and culture across Asia including masks, drums, dance and vessels for food and drink. Part design scrum, part enquiry into art history, part study break, this innovative extra-curricular workshop model is related to the tradition of object lessons as put forward by Swiss educator Johann Heinreich Pestalozzi (1746–1827) that involve interaction with objects and open-ended questions. Object Lessons ++ expands this mode of enquiry to include hands-on design and applications in our contemporary world, both real and virtual.
The first workshop, scheduled at the end of AY 2021 Semester 1, will explore masks from several angles: looking at historical and cultural examples of masks from across Asia, reckoning with the current COVID-19 crisis and ongoing mandates around wearing masks in public, and also dealing with issues of personal identity and meaning-making as creative members of an academic community. Come join us for this creative workshop to celebrate the end of term, reconnect with open ended design, and as a way to get to know your classmates even better!
