Workshop on Design Education in India

6-7 January 2022

The landscape of design and media education is dynamic and changing, evolving in response to pedagogical shifts, exigencies of industry, and the need to pivot to remote and asynchronous online learning. Foundational elements of design education previously covered in post-graduate programmes have been embedded in undergraduate curricula for BFA, BDes, and BTech degrees, and also have a place in skills-oriented technical short courses that provide relevant training for the needs of broadcast media and digital creative industries.  In such a large and shifting landscape, this event hopes to lead a crucial re-examination of the state of design education in India and propose models and strategies for moving forward.

On January 6 and 7, 2022, we will host a two-day Workshop on Design Education in India, which will address opportunities to examine and rethink design education at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. This will include weighing the relative strengths and weaknesses of segmenting discipline-specific courses of study versus crafting universal and trans-disciplinary curricula, as well as the need to address art and design history, heritage, and craft. We will also examine the role of variations in course structure and format including open electives, workshop weeks, study-travel, and cross registration, as well as co-curricular resources like artists’ residencies, museums and galleries, industry partnerships, broadcasting, and publishing. In addition to presentations from leaders in the field, the workshop will include time for participants to brainstorm and propose ideas for their own institutions. Discussions will also address faculty recruitment and development, geared toward growing and sustaining meaningful professional networks in the design education community that enable the productive sharing of resources.
