Financial flows in Africa

15 Sep 2023 05.30 PM - 07.30 PM Virtual Industry/Academic Partners, Public

Funds flow into Africa primarily in the form of aid, investments, and remittance. The good news is that such flows have been on the rise since 2000. Aid is up five times, FDI has jumped more than eight-fold, and Africa has been receiving nine times more remittance than it did 20 years ago. The bad news is that the continent also loses US$89bn every year due to illicit capital outflows. Although the overall business climate has vastly improved Africa continues to struggle when it comes to inward investments. It gets barely 5% of the total global foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and a fraction of portfolio investments. What can be done to accelerate the flow of finance into Africa and stem illicit outflows? Watch Amit Jain, Director, NTU-SBF Centre for African Studies discuss this with Dr Kouassi Yeboua.
