Title of Talk 1: Machine learning and computer vision research work in CISS

Bio: Xudong Jiang, IEEE Fellow,  received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), and the Ph.D. degree from Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg, Germany. During his work in UESTC, he received two Science and Technology Awards from the Ministry for Electronic Industry of China. From 1998 to 2004, he was with the Institute for Infocomm Research, A-Star, Singapore, as a Lead Scientist and the Head of the Biometrics Laboratory, where he developed a system that achieved the most efficiency and the second most accuracy at the International Fingerprint Verification Competition in 2000. He joined Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, as a Faculty Member, in 2004. Dr Jiang holds 7 patents and has authored over 200 papers with over 60 papers in IEEE journals, including 18 papers in IEEE T-IP and 10 papers in IEEE T-PAMI. His publications are well-cited with H-index 63 and 8 of his papers were listed as the top 1% highly cited papers in the academic field of Engineering by Essential Science Indicators. He served as IFS TC Member of IEEE Signal Processing Society, Associate Editor for IEEE SPL, Associate Editor for IEEE T-IP and the founding editorial board member for IET Biometrics. Currently, Dr Jiang is an IEEE Fellow and serves as Senior Area Editor for IEEE T-IP and Editor-in-Chief for IET Biometrics. His current research interests include image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, machine learning, and biometrics.

Abstract: The Centre for Information Sciences and Systems (CISS) is a key research centre established within the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. It houses several key labs and research programmes to support Singapore vision of becoming a Smart Nation. These include the Smart Nation Lab, ROSE (Rapid-Rich Object Search) Lab, Connected Smart Mobility (COSMO) Lab, Schaeffler Hub for Advanced REsearch (SHARE), and other topics like 5G communications and cybersecurity. We advance research and innovation in key technologies, comprising Data, Image & Video Analytics, Advanced Sensing Technologies, Cyber & Network Security, Positioning & RF Technologies, and Communication & Network Systems. Our faculty members, research staff and graduate students are actively collaborating with government agencies and industry partners to conduct R&D works that have the outcome of deploying technologies in the real world. This talk focus on the Machine Learning and computer vision research work in CISS.

Title of Talk 2: Scientific Research and International Cooperation at School of Automation, Hangzhou Dianzi University, China

Bio: Professor Jiuwen Cao received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the School of Applied Mathematics, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China, in 2005 and 2008, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2012. From 2012 to 2013, Dr. Cao was a Research Fellow with NTU. Dr. Cao is a full Professor at Hangzhou Dianzi University, China, and served as the Dean of School of Automation, Hangzhou Dianzi University, China since 2023. His research interests include machine learning, artificial neural networks, and biomedical data processing. Dr. Cao has published more than 100 journal papers.  Dr. Cao is serving/served as an associate editor for several international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-I: Regular Papers, Journal of the Franklin Institute, Neurocomputing, Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, etc.

Abstract: Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) was founded in 1956, HDU is a young institute of higher learning on the southeast coast of China. It thrives with the Chinese Information industry, and has become a multi-disciplinary research-teaching university and a provincial hub for sci-tech research and development nowadays. In this talk, I will first briefly introduce Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU), China, followed by a more detailed discussion on the scientific research and international cooperation at School of Automation, HDU. The emphasis will be on machine learning and applications.
