2024 MIT Technology Review Innovators under 35 (Asia Pacific)

Congratulations to Asst Prof Dmitrii Ustiugov for being featured in the “35 Innovators Under 35” list in the Visionaries category by MIT Technology Review 2024 (Asia Pacific). Asst Prof Dmitrii Ustiugov has led the cross-institutional research team that developed and maintained vHive, a full-stack open-source framework and ecosystem for serverless experimentation and innovation, currently used by numerous academic and industry organizations worldwide.

Asst Prof Dmitrii Ustiugov focuses on the intersection of machine learning and systems architecture, including designing fast, scalable, and resource-efficient cloud systems. His research primarily centers on cloud computing and serverless computing architectures, as well as system support for large-scale LLM inference services. With the acceleration of digital transformation, enterprises increasingly need to build and deploy applications flexibly and efficiently. The emergence of serverless computing architecture enhances developer productivity by fully managing cloud infrastructure, allowing developers to concentrate on business logic and code. However, serverless cloud systems also introduce new challenges and optimization opportunities that necessitate revisiting the software-hardware stack. The reliance of most serverless providers on proprietary infrastructure further complicates and slows down innovation in this area.

In collaboration with colleagues at the University of Edinburgh and ETH Zurich, Asst Prof Dmitrii Ustiugov’s team has developed and maintained vHive, a comprehensive open-source ecosystem for serverless cloud benchmarking, experimentation, and innovation, enabling unobstructed research in serverless systems. vHive integrates production-grade components, such as AWS Firecracker, Containers, and Kubernetes, facilitating cross-stack systems research and innovation in realistic cloud environments. Today, more than 30 universities (including Stanford and MIT) and global companies like Intel use vHive to evaluate and improve their commercial products, cloud services, and academic project-based education. With the growing dependence of enterprises, research institutions, and governments on cloud computing, the significance of research in cloud systems is evident. Asst Prof Ustiugov is determined to address and overcome fundamental challenges in cloud infrastructure, including scalability and energy efficiency.
