Kean to Do Well: A CCDS Student’s Journey of Growth and Leadership
As Ng Tze Kean enters the final semester of undergraduate studies at NTU, the bright young man reflects on an enriching university experience shaped by meaningful roles and diverse opportunities. Affectionately known as Kean, his time at NTU, specifically the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS), has been characterised by growth, adaptability, and a focus on both personal and professional development.
Kean will graduate with a Bachelor of Computing in Computer Science, with a minor in Business. The resourceful young man leverages his many skills not just in schoolwork, but in his part-time work, and other pursuits.
Engaging in Outreach and Representation
Kean’s involvement in NTU’s outreach programs and ambassador roles has been a significant aspect of his journey. As a CCDS and Global Education Mobility (GEM) Ambassador, he organised events, represented NTU at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and hosted dignitaries such as the King of Sweden. These roles allowed him to develop interpersonal skills and gain a broader understanding of NTU’s role in fostering international collaboration.
"These programmes gave me the chance to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and represent NTU in various capacities," Kean says. "It has been a fulfilling way to contribute to the university community."
Developing Cultural Awareness
Kean’s experiences at SJTU and NTU exposed him to different cultural practices, enhancing his ability to navigate diverse environments. For example, during a toast at an event in China, he learned the importance of lowering his glass to show respect to seniors - a small but significant cultural nuance. These experiences have equipped him with the skills necessary to work effectively in global settings.
Balancing Academics with Broader Interests
In addition to his ambassadorial roles, Kean pursued academic and extracurricular opportunities with enthusiasm. A summer programme at Peking University introduced him to research and industry leaders, further inspiring his interest in analytics. He also explored sustainability through a startup project aimed at reducing food waste by promoting discounted “ugly” produce. These initiatives reflect Kean’s commitment to applying his skills to practical challenges.
Building Connections
The relationships Kean has built during his time at NTU have been a cornerstone of his experience. From collaborating with peers to engaging with faculty, these connections have enriched his perspective and provided valuable learning opportunities.
"University is not just about academics; it’s also about the relationships and networks you build along the way," he notes.
Preparing for the Future
Balancing multiple responsibilities required careful planning and prioritisation. Kean used tools like Microsoft To-Do and a structured calendar to stay on top of his commitments. Looking forward, he plans to further his expertise in financial analytics and pursue a Master’s in Financial Engineering. These aspirations align his academic achievements with his career goals.
Kean’s university journey highlights the importance of making the most of available opportunities, fostering adaptability, and cultivating meaningful connections. As he transitions into the next phase of his life, his experiences at NTU will serve as a strong foundation for future endeavours.
