IMS-IAS Public Lecture "Topological Deep Learning" by Prof Gunnar Carlsson

IAS NTU - IMS NUS Public Lecture by Prof Gunnar Carlsson
26 Jul 2022 10.00 AM - 11.00 AM Zoom Alumni, Current Students, Industry/Academic Partners, Prospective Students

Prof Gunnar Carlsson is the Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics at Stanford University. He is a world-leading expert in algebraic topology and is widely regarded as one of the founders for topological data analysis.

Abstract of his talk:

Deep learning is a very powerful methodology which can solve many AI problems. There are a number of problems with it, though, including a lack of transparency and a lack of generalisability from one data set to another.

In addition, it often requires a great deal of data for training and can be very expensive computationally. In this talk, he will discuss some investigations into the behavior of deep learning, and suggest some approaches to deal with the problems mentioned above.
