Public Lecture (Mandarin): Sharing session on Robert Kuok - A Memoir
Known as the “Sugar King” and the richest man in Malaysia, Mr Robert Kuok owns Kuok Group, which has interest in hotels, real estate and commodities. Educated in Raffles Institution, he founded the world’s first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore in 1971. His enterprising achievements in South East Asia and China has been perceived as an amazing feat by many around the world. Since the publication of the memoir, it has received international attention, especially in Singapore and Malaysia.
IAS and the Nanyang Centre of Public Administration at NTU co-organised the Chinese public lecture to discuss the memoir on 27 January 2018 at the Nanyang Executive Centre. Chaired by Prof Chew Soon Beng (Director, Master of Science in Applied Economics, NTU), the three esteemed speakers were Prof Huang Chih Lien (Director, Hong Kong Society of Asia & Pacific 21), Prof Phua Kok Khoo (Director, IAS) and Mr Su King Siang (Vice-Chairman, Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum). Around 200 people attended, including audience from overseas such as Malaysia and China.
