Filtration mode of EMS

Innovative Method and Apparatus for Chemical-Free and Energy-Efficient pH Adjustment

Synopsis

An energy-efficient electrochemical method using an electrochemical membrane system (EMS) for pH adjustment without chemicals. By applying varying voltages, it separates streams into alkaline and acidic components, offering precise pH control crucial for diverse industrial and biological processes.

Opportunity

The invention relates to the development of a chemical-free and energy-efficient electrochemical method and apparatus for solution pH adjustment. The apparatus is an electrochemical membrane system (EMS) which enables pH adjustment and separation of alkalinised and acidised streams. By applying different voltages, reduction and oxidation reactions occur on the cathode and anode, respectively. Consequently, the solution in the cathodic and anodic channel becomes alkaline and acidic, respectively.

pH is an important quantity that reflects the chemical state of a solution. It regulates the availability of nutrients, biological functions, microbial activity and the chemical interactions within the solution.

Technology

The method involves passing at least one liquid stream through a filtration membrane with two distinct sides. A potential difference is then applied across two electrodes, each located at different sides of the membrane. This process results in the separation of the liquid stream into two effluent streams with different alkalinity/pH levels, as they flow past the respective electrodes.

This method offers several advantages over existing technologies. First, it covers a wider pH range for water production. Second, it is chemical-free, energy-efficient and cost-effective, thereby reducing chemical consumption, usage and waste. Third, the system is multifunctional and user-friendly, allowing for easy adjustments of functions to meet different customer requirements. Finally, the electrodes in the electrolyser can be protected from scaling, thus prolonging the lifespan while minimising the need for cleaning and maintenance of the system.
