Hall 12
The Hall 12 Garden consists of two parts: the edible garden and the aesthetic garden. They are managed by the residents, including students, residential mentors and faculty-in-residence. The aesthetic garden consists of a variety of flowering and ornamental plants. The crops in the edible garden are planted in planter boxes. They rotate, as most of them have only a life span of a few months. We have had numerous different vegetables, herbs and spices, including
- Climbers like pumpkin, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, French bean, long bean and cucumber
- Fruiting vegetables including lady fingers, chili, egg plant, sweet corn, tomato, green pepper
- Leafy vegetables like xiao baicai, caixin, lettuce, celery, kailan
- Herbs and spices such as basil, rosemary, mint, dill, lemon grass, aloe vera
- Root vegetables like radish, ginger, turmeric, sweet potato.
Some of them are very productive, some not so, depending on how well they take to the soil conditions. We try them out and then plant more of the productive ones. To have a decent harvest, we need to plant enough of one plant. So you would normally see only one or two types of plants in one planter box. We use only organic fertilisers and no pesticides.
Gardening relaxes the mind and yet it's good exercise too. The tranquility of the plants, especially when they are lush and green, is refreshing and pacifying. Join us and make our halls beautiful, for the enjoyment of everyone.
