The Potter
The Potter programme attempts to use the art of pottery to bring across the important concept of moulding the impossible from a seemingly unattractive piece of clay. In addition, to understand that in order to transform the moulded clay into a usable piece of pottery, it has to undergo the baptism of fire – very similar to the process of grooming an effective and responsible person in society. It examines the art form from a scientific perspective – on the choice of clay and the chemistry of the firing process. It also covers the cultural and ethnic influences on the art form. The programme employs a series of workshops to cover the foundations, the techniques, the cultural and practical influences on pottery, the firing process, and the narrative of the work. It is also supported by practical sessions on the moulding and firing process. Selected works from the participants will be showcased at an exhibition at the end of the programme. The individual potters will also share their thought processes and the narratives behind their work.
