What we do
DiscoverLUMINOUS! is a multidisciplinary research centre bringing together faculty and researchers from multiple schools and departments across NTU — including School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE), School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PMS), School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB) and Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) — to drive transformative advances in lighting, photonics and display technologies. Our focus is on developing next-generation, ultrahigh-efficiency semiconductor light-emitting devices, spanning wavelengths from the infrared to the extreme ultraviolet, leveraging both classical and quantum properties of light.
Lighting, which accounts for approximately 19% of global electricity consumption, is a cornerstone of modern society. Enhancing efficiency in artificial lighting is critical to promoting sustainable growth and unlocking substantial economic and societal benefits worldwide.
LUMINOUS! aspires to establish itself as a global research hub, fostering a robust international network of industrial partners in Singapore. Our team of pioneering scientists and emerging researchers is supported by cutting-edge facilities, including advanced equipment for semiconductor epitaxial growth and colloidal synthesis, device modeling, physics, fabrication, and high-performance system development. Together, we are paving the way for breakthroughs in optoelectronic and photonic technologies that will shape the future.
