MAE prof invents Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant
MAE Associate Professor Ang Wei Tech, executive director of the Rehabilitation Research Institute of
Singapore (RRIS) at NTU, supervised the development of a wearable robot that can catch a person from falling. Working closely with Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA) has been successfully invented.
Falling down has been a big cause of death according to WHO, especially in countries like Singapore with lots of elderlies. In fact, 40% injury-related death in Singapore has been the cause for this.
The robot has passed clinical trials involving approximately 50 participants. This includes patients suffering from stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. The robot was successful in helping the patients to sit, stand, even walk.
