​The Sports Medicine Theory Course (SMTC) comprises six online lecture modules and aims to provide participants with fundamental knowledge of Sports Medicine practice. 

Course Duration
The course runs from 1 January to 30 June annually. 

Course Overview
The SMTC involves the following:
  • ​Six online lecture modules with twenty-four lecture topics. 
  • Participants will need to take a self-administered open-book quiz at the end of each topic before progressing to the next. 
  • There are no exams or practical components in the course.
  • Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successfully completing the six modules.
The completion of the course does not imply or confer any competency or qualification related to the practice of sports medicine.

1.1 Cardiorespiratory response to exercise

1.3 Biomechanics of walking, running, swimming, throwing and racquet sports
1.4 Principles of injury prevention and rehabilitation

SMTC5002 Sports Injuries I

2.1 Fundamentals of sports medicine (pathophysiology, diagnosis, investigation)
2.2 The foot, ankle and leg
2.3 The knee
2.4 The hip, groin and pelvis

SMTC5003 Sports Injuries II

3.1 The lumbar spine
3.2 The shoulder
3.3 The elbow, wrist and hand
3.4 The cervical spine and concussion in sports

SMTC5004 Medical Considerations in Sports and Medicine

4.1 Risk and benefits of physical activity and exercise
4.2 Pre-participation screening
4.3a Clinical exercise testing and cardiovascular screening tests
4.3b Exercise-induced asthma: what? where? how?
4.4 Exercise prescription for health and common chronic disease

SMTC5005 Exercise in Special Populations

5.1a Exercise in the child and adolescent athlete
5.1b Exercise in the elderly
5.2 Exercise in the female athlete and pregnancy
