News: Anatomy Challenge 2025

By Keith Ng, Chairman, Anatomy Challenge Organising Committee

This year, the Anatomy Challenge kicked off with a total of 319 students across 28 schools all over Singapore, with the theme “Beginnings of Life” which encompassed the female reproductive anatomy and early embryology. Following a rousing welcome address by the Chairperson, Keith Ng, participants’ knowledge was put to the test in the Individual Challenge, which was held digitally for the first time since its inception.

Participants were then given the opportunity to explore the various applications of anatomy in medicine at the various booths meticulously planned by the Organising Committee and helmed by enthusiastic student volunteers and esteemed content experts. Each individual booth was curated to cover a distinct aspect of medicine and broaden participants’ perspectives.

One such booth included a unique post-partum haemorrhage booth by Dr Muhammad Fairuz, Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), where participants learned about the various management techniques for post-partum haemorrhage, and even got the chance to try their hand with mannikins.

LKCMedicine MBBS Lead Dr Daniel Quek Jing Yong delivered a heartfelt keynote address to an energetic audience of students and distinguished guests, which included Emeritus Consultant Professor Low Cheng Hock and Vice-Dean (Clinical Affairs) Professor Kwek Tong Kiat.

Dr Quek’s session was followed by an address by Guest-of-Honour Adjunct Assistant Professor Rajeswari Kathirvel, Head and Senior Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at KKH, who imparted her wisdom to eager participants. Sharing her journey in caring for pregnant women, Dr Rajeswari reflected on the importance of anatomy in her field.

An inaugural Postcard Design Competition was held this year, with the winner, Nadea Sophia from Victoria Junior College claiming the top place amongst a vast pool of entries, in addition to having her design featured as part of official Anatomy Challenge merchandise.

The Final Gameshow saw the top five performing teams from the Individual Challenge duking it out to clinch the coveted Low Cheng Hock Challenge Shield among other prizes. The event was graced by distinguished judges Associate Professor Reddy Mogali (LKCMedicine Head of Anatomy), Dr Vivek Perumal (LKCMedicine Senior Lecturer of Anatomy), Adjunct Associate Professor Gerald Tan (Senior Consultant of Radiology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital) and Dr Li Xinyi (Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at KKH).

The Final Gameshow was a rollercoaster thrill of highs and lows as the various teams from Hwa Chong Institution, National Junior College, NUS High, Raffles Institution and Temasek Junior College fought it out in a fierce battle of knowledge and wits.

In a nail-biting finale, Raffles Institution emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, clinching the Anatomy Challenge Championship Trophy and the coveted Low Cheng Hock Challenge Shield.

The Anatomy Challenge Organising Committee would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the various staff and faculty whose generous support helped bring this event to life. The Organising Committee is also grateful for all the enthusiastic volunteers who helped run this massive event, in addition to our generous sponsors whose support made this event possible.

Each year, the Anatomy Challenge evolves as it continues to strive in its mission to spread the appreciation of anatomy in medicine among pre-university students. It has been a journey of many challenges. However, the Organising Committee continues to overcome these obstacles every step of the way in our efforts to make Anatomy Challenge a memorable event for all.
