In Focus: Celebrating 10 years of LKCMedicine
By: Amanda Lee, Senior Assistant Manager (Media), Communications and Outreach
On that day, the signing of a historic Collaboration Agreement between NTU Singapore and Imperial College London (Imperial) established Singapore’s newest medical school.
Fast forward to today, LKCMedicine is a renowned world-class medical school and home to several vibrant research centres. The School which has an innovative pedagogy, has already produced three cohorts of doctors who are on the frontlines of battling Covid-19 and other illnesses.
Speaking at the School’s 10th anniversary hybrid event on 28 October this year, Mr Lim noted, “Today we can all be very proud of LKCMedicine and what it stands for: a world-class medical school delivering on its mission of producing doctors you and I would like to have caring for us.
At that same event attended by some 200 participants via Zoom and a smaller number in the LKCMedicine’s Headquarters Boardroom, other members of the School’s leadership took turns to reflect on what the School has achieved.
Imperial which played a pivotal role in LKCMedicine’s success, was represented by its President Professor Alice Gast, saying at the anniversary event that the 10th year milestone “is an opportunity to thank the generous benefactors and philanthropists for their vision and generosity as well as the Singapore Government for foresight in helping us to set up LKCMedicine”.
Representing LKCMedicine’s primary clinical partner, National Healthcare Group Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Philip Choo said he is very proud and happy that the School has succeeded extremely well.
LKCMedicine also boasts a research programme designed to have an impact on tomorrow’s medicine and healthcare landscape.Dean Professor James Best who took the reins of the School in 2014 said, “We have come through hard work, through the adversity that has confronted us this year and I think it’s a mark and maturity of strength of the school that we have actually made a very positive contribution to Singapore and internationally in confronting the pandemic”. Here’s to the next 10 years!
Happy 10th Anniversary, LKCMedicine!
NTU Registrar, former LKCMedicine Chief Operating Officer Mr Chan Wei Chuen
"LKCMedicine is 10 years old! I have been with the school since it was, probably, weeks old. And now, it is 10 years old, as old as my son! I wish LKCMedicine more good years and all the best!"
Toh Kian Chui Distinguished Professor and Professor of Developmental Biology Philip W. Ingham
"On behalf of my academic colleagues, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Imperial College London and NTU Singapore on the 10th anniversary of their unique collaboration – that is the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. As one of the original cohorts of research faculty back in 2012, it has been a real pleasure and privilege to be part of the extraordinary and exciting journey to seeing the School to what it is today; a vibrant community of learning and research."
Assistant Dean Year 5 Associate Professor Tham Kum Ying
"LKCMedicine has started well and accomplished much in our first 10 years. I hope that our School, like our students, will embrace high tech and maintain its high touch for many more 10 years to come."
Assistant Dean Year 4 Associate Professor Wong Teck Yee
"My heartiest congratulations to LKCMedicine for 10 amazing years! The success of LKCMedicine today is a collaborative effort from various stakeholders including NTU Singapore, Imperial, our primary clinical partner, NHG, our Governing Board, faculty, staff and mostly importantly students and alumni. I look forward to many milestones ahead in the future!"
Assistant Dean, Clinical Communication Dr Tanya Tierney
"Ten years ago, I was approached by the senior leadership at Imperial College London. 'Would you be willing to give one day a week to help us develop the curriculum for Singapore? Oh, and by the way, there is an option to relocate if you are interested.' How could I say 'no'? What a journey it has been! I have seen the School grow from a single office at NTU main campus to the beautiful dual campus we enjoy now. The excitement of meeting our inaugural cohort as they nervously stepped into the MMI interview rooms. And now we have three cohorts of 'doctors you and I would like caring for us' working in the Singapore healthcare system and doing us proud. It has been (and still is) a pleasure and privilege to witness the growth of each student, as they navigate their journey of learning and self-discovery to become the doctors they aspire to be. I am so proud of all of them. Happy birthday, LKCMedicine – and here is to the next 10 years!"
Professor of Tissue Repair and Regeneration David Becker
"As one of the pioneer researchers of LKCMedicine, it has been amazing to be part of the development of the School. During my first day of work in 2013, I recalled walking across the fields towards the old colonial building, which was the Headquarters of the School! I admired the way it has been restored and modernised with the mirrored glass annex on the back reflecting the old in the new! It seems ages ago that I was watching the groundbreaking ceremony at NTU and Novena. Seemingly in no time at all, we have two amazing research and teaching buildings. Whilst all this was happening, the School was actively recruiting young, talented researchers and it is fantastic to see how they have developed and how much they have achieved in a relatively short period of time. For me, it has been a great opportunity to work with talented engineers at NTU and cross over disciplines and open up new areas of research for which I am grateful for."
Professor of Translational Neuroscience Balázs Zoltán Gulyás
"I joined the School as a part-time professor at its infancy stage in 2012, and as a full professor in 2013. I am happy and contented that in the past eight years I have been able to observe how a little sapling has grown into a young tree. In the Tao Te Ching Laozi wisely said that "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Though until now we have only done a few miles, I am convinced that these few miles have already been part of a very long journey leading to a respected and renowned medical school. I look forward to the next miles of the journey and wish much strength, stamina, and enthusiasm to all my fellow travellers on this great journey."
Imperial Collaborative Partnerships Officer, London Office Ms Roxy Hughes
"Congratulations LKCMedicine on turning 10! It has been a pleasure to collaborate and meet with LKCMedicine students and staff through our variety of student activities and our joint conference, Transform MedEd. Following a decade-long partnership, the London Office of LKCMedicine at Imperial looks forward to our continued partnership and watching the School continue on its journey of success!"
Visiting Professor Annelies Wilder-Smith
"It was a privilege to be part of the pioneering group in the early days of LKCMedicine. Opportunities to shape and influence abounded, and I hold fond memories of our many brainstorming meetings with the School's faculty. Every opinion counted, and almost every idea was transformed into reality. Meanwhile, LKCMedicine has matured into a medical university with high standing and reputation. I wish LKCMedicine many more decades of ongoing success driven by a sense of purpose, courage for innovation, and determination to excel."
LKCMedicine Senior Assistant Director Finance, Ms Foo Yuek Shuan
"Time flies, LKCMedicine is now 10! I have been with Finance Department of LKCMedicine for 10 years now. I remember when I first joined the School, our office was in NTU main campus. Back then, I was told by the Finance Director, Ms Janet Teo to be prepared to work hard as we have to help to build up the various policies and procedures for the department. We have come a long way and we are currently enjoying our workspace at level 2 of the LKCMedicine nostalgic HQ building in Novena campus. I am happy to have played a part in the growth of the School! I made many friends like Rohanah, Mariam, Hee Kiang, Geraldine, Suzanne, Avery, Alan, Andrew, Winnie, Ken, and many more. It's great to see how LKCMedicine has grown and established itself as a leading medical school in Singapore."
LKCMedicine Manager Science and Anatomy Laboratories Mr Darren Lim
"It has been such a privilege to see the School grow exponentially in the last decade to a world-class medical school in Singapore and on a global stage. It was a Herculean task but when you band people to believe in a collective cause, LKCMedicine did not reach for the skies, we went straight for the stars! Happy 10th Anniversary LKCMedicine! May you shine even brighter for years to come."
LKCMedicine Assistant Manager, Research Administration and Support Services Mr Sufian Bin Suderman
"I have seen LKCMedicine grown from just being an idea to a renowned medical school today. It is amazing to see how our efforts at LKCMedicine are building the future of Singapore's healthcare. Whether you are a technician, researcher, or administrative staff, each of us have had a hand in supporting the development of the School. Personally, I have reached a milestone at LKCMedicine as this was where I found the love of my life, my wife. Here is to many more milestones and achievements at LKCMedicine in the years to come! Happy 10th Anniversary LKCMedicine!"
LKCMedicine Class of 2018 Alumni Dr Leon Tan
