LKCMEDICINE EDUCATORS ACHIEVE PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION FROM ADVANCE HE

LKCMedicine celebrates the success of 11 of our educators in achieving professional recognition from Advance HE. Based in the UK, Advance HE works with institutions and higher education across the world to improve higher education for staff, students and society, and runs a fellowship scheme which promotes educators for their engagement with learning and teaching. Achieving Fellowship is an honour, and recognition of practice, professionalism, impact and leadership of teaching and learning. All LKCMedicine submissions were successful at the first attempt, signifying clear demonstration of meeting Advance HE’s criteria for excellence. Our colleagues have been recognised for their commitment to professional values, engagement in appropriate teaching practices, incorporation of subject and pedagogic research in curriculum delivery, and belief in continuing professional development. Over 124,000 educators from 99 different countries have achieved Advance HE Fellowship (Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior, Principal Fellow).

 

LKCMEDICINE STUDENTS RECEIVE JAMIYAH SINGAPORE-DR KUTBUDDIN MEDICAL STUDIES AWARD 

LKCMedicine students Fahim Shaik Ansari Ahamed and Tiara Qistina Tho have received the inaugural Jamiyah Singapore-Dr Kutbuddin Medical Studies Award. They were conferred the award at a ceremony held on 26 November at the Jamiyah Islamic Centre. Named in memory of the late Dr Kutbuddin Dohadwala, who was instrumental in setting up Jamiyah Free Medical Clinic, the award intends to inspire and support future doctors and medical practitioners on their education journey and to give back to the community with their medical knowledge. 

 

NANYANG ASSISTANT PROFESSOR FRANKLIN ZHONG SELECTED AS EMBO YOUNG INVESTIGATOR

Nanyang Assistant Professor Franklin Zhong is among 24 life scientists selected as the newest members of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme, as announced by EMBO on 22 November. He joins the existing network of 135 current and 390 former members of the programme. It supports excellent group leaders who have been in independent positions for less than four years and have an excellent track record of scientific achievements. They will receive financial and practical support for a period of four years, starting from January 2023. EMBO is an international organisation of life scientists and directs funding from member states towards research fellowships, courses, workshops, conferences, and science policy initiatives. LKCMEDICINE DEAN AND FACULTY NAMED AS CLARIVATE HIGHLY CITED RESEARCHERS

LKCMedicine Dean Professor Joseph Sung, Professor David Lye, Professor Laurent Renia, Joint Professors Chen Peng, Chen Xiaodong, and Joint Associate Professor Pu Kanyi were named on the Clarivate list of Highly Cited Researchers 2022. They have been recognised as researchers who have demonstrated significant influence with exceptional performance through publications of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top one per cent by citations for field and year. They are named alongside more than 6,900 international scientists on the list published by Clarivate Analytics, a US-based data company, on 15 November. INAUGURAL SINGAPORE OPEN RESEARCH CONFERENCE

On 2 November, the inaugural Singapore Open Research Conference with the theme “Accelerating Research with Responsible Open Science” was held at LKCMedicine’s Novena Campus. Jointly organised by the Research Integrity and Ethics Office, Library and LKCMedicine, the conference was graced by NTU Deputy President and Provost Professor Ling San and LKCMedicine Dean Professor Joseph Sung. Some 150 open research drivers and practitioners representing various research institutions, funders, and publishers gathered to learn from local and international perspectives. This is timely as Singapore is one of the Member States of UNESCO, which has recently adopted the Recommendation on Open Science.

 

NEW ACADEMY TO GROOM MORE CLINICIAN-SCIENTISTS FOR RESEARCH TO IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOME 

LKCMedicine marks another milestone with the soft launch of the Academy of Clinician Scientists and Innovators (ACSI) on 31 October. Set up to grow clinical research, and to attract and nurture research and innovation talents within the National Healthcare Group (NHG) and LKCMedicine, the Academy will provide a platform for clinicians and researchers to exchange ideas on bringing translational research to patient care. ACSI Co-Presidents, Professor Joseph Sung, LKCMedicine Dean and Professor Leo Yee Sin, Executive Director of NCID welcomed about 60 clinicians and scientists from both organisations with stories about their journey as clinician-scientists and their insights into building a research culture. The evening’s networking event was hosted by LKCMedicine Associate Professor Sunny Wong, with the discussion moderated by ACSI’s Vice Presidents, NHG’s Professor Lim Su Chi and LKCMedicine’s Professor John Chambers. Over dinner, attendees voiced their feedback and discussed how to move forward together to build up clinical research.

 

LEADING SCIENTISTS TO ADVANCE STUDY OF GENETICS OF NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DISORDER IN ASIANS

LKCMedicine hosted the 2nd Pan-Asia Symposium on Genetics of Brain Disorders held from 3 to 5 November at the Ong Tiong Tat and Irene Tan Liang Kheng Auditorium in the Clinical Sciences Building. The event brought international experts in neuropsychiatric disorders together to share their latest findings on the genetics of brain disorders and to pave the way for effective therapeutics. LKCMedicine Professor of Neuroscience and Mental Health George Augustine, who is the Director of Neuroscience and Mental Health programme, and Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics Wilson Goh discussed significant clinical, genetic, and translational aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders during this two and a half day hybrid conference. Organised with the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a global leader in neuropsychiatric research, this symposium brings together neuroscientists and industry experts from the Stanley Center to foster future collaboration in neuropsychiatric research in Singapore. LKCMEDICINE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS AY2021-22

LKCMedicine has about 3,000 educators, clinicians and healthcare staff appointed as leads, adjunct faculty, clinical practice facilitators, content experts and clinical teachers. The School also has pastoral care non-faculty tutors and non-faculty clinical practice facilitators who contribute significantly to the successful delivery of LKCMedicine education. In October, awards across seven categories were given to recognise these individuals and departments who have made outstanding contributions to teaching, research supervision and supporting the student experience.
