NCPA successfully organised the panel on the BRI in Global and Comparative Perspective at the 4th BRI Interdisciplinary Cooperation Conference in Lancaster University, United Kingdom

The Fourth Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Interdisciplinary Cooperation Conference hosted by the Lancaster University Belt and Road Initiative Research Consortium and co-organised by the College of State Governance of Southwest University, was convened at Lancaster University, United Kingdom from 13-14th June 2024. With the theme on “New Trends in Belt and Road Initiative Research”, this two-day event brought together academic speakers and scholars from multiple disciplines and universities to, discuss the progress, achievements and future opportunities of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The Lien Research Programme on the Belt and Road Initiative, NCPA was privileged to partner the host as an academic partner. 

At the Roundtable discussion China’s Rise and the Future World Order, Professor Liu Hong shared insights about global digital politics by connecting the current cutting-edge technological development of AI, digital platforms and related industries.  

It preceded with the panel on The BRI in Global and Comparative Perspectives organised by NCPA. Chaired by Professor Robert Geyer, Head of the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at the Lancaster University, the panel consisted of: NCPA researchers, Dr Yao Chao and Dr Celia Lee; Dr Igor Rogelja from the University College London and Dr Xiang Cao from Sichuan University. 

 

Dr Chao Yao first presented the Special Economic Zone development in Cambodia in the context of BRI. Dr Igor Rogelja, a lecturer from UCL, discussed his research on China’s multi-national corporations in a European film, including image making and cultural influence. The third speech was delivered by our senior research fellow at NCPA, Dr Celia Lee Khiaw Peng. She introduced the book series on RCEP being prepared by NCPA and presented her chapter in detail about the development of the fintech sector in BRI and the role of Singapore in the application of AI in the wide region. Dr Xiang Cao conducted the last presentation, where he evaluated the environmental sustainability of China’s BRI based on economic models and quantitative methods. The whole panel referred to different but interrelated themes and topics about BRI and had an active interaction with participants and the audience at the conference.
