The 15th Stratagem-NTU Sino-Singapore DialogueRevolutionising Global Trade and Financial Sector in BRI and Beyond: AI in Fintech Development

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has seen a profound transformation through digital collaboration, catalysing the growth of the digital economy and achieving synergy in global trade. Through collaborative efforts, nations are advancing their development and enhancing the worldwide digital ecosystem. The fusion of technology, trade, and diplomacy is paving the way for a new era of global economic interdependence and shared prosperity.

A timely theme on Revolutionising Global Trade and Financial Sector in BRI and Beyond: AI in Fintech Development, the 15th Stratagem-NTU Sino-Singapore was convened on 18 April 2024 at the Island Ballroom in Shangri La Hotel. Featuring experts and leaders from the government, industries and think tanks: Ms Tin Peiling, elected Member of Parliament in Singapore and Chairperson of Communications and Information, Government Parliamentary Committee; Ms Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Thailand e-Commerce Centre and President of Thai e-Commerce Association; Mr Lien Choong Luen, General Manager of Gojek Singapore; Professor Hammam Riza, President of Collaborative AI Research and Industrial Innovation (KORIKA) Indonesia; and Dr Wang Junwei, Executive Director of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Innovation Cooperation Centre, Bangkok, the dialogue was chaired and moderated by Mr Uantchern Loh, Chief Executive Officer (Asia Pacific) of Black Sun Global and Founding Chief Executive of Singapore Accountancy Commission.

The panelists engaged in a lively and insightful discussion, deliberating on the applications of AI in the Fintech sector and addressing challenging questions such as: whether the development of AI, will create big distinctions between big companies and small start-ups; whether AI is to be legalized and regulated by the government and how to make AI safe, accessible and available to all walks of society. Mr Loh concluded the dialogue by asking all the panelists “What is their Christmas present for everyone with regards to AI?”  All panelists agreed that within the right balance of regulations, training and public awareness of AI, application of AI in the Fintech sector will fuel trade and financial sector developments in the region and beyond.
