At the university town hall this morning, NTU President Prof Subra Suresh announced the creation of 50 new named faculty chair professorships as part of a major effort to recognise outstanding achievement at early, mid-career and senior faculty levels.
The initiative is part of an ambitious plan, first announced at the university town hall meeting in August 2018, to create up to 100 new term chair professorships over five years to attract, nurture and retain outstanding faculty at NTU.
Prof Suresh told the university community that following concerted efforts to realise this, NTU had benefitted from new funds from external gifts and the accompanying matching endowment that have been specifically set aside for term chair professorships for all levels of faculty ranks in NTU’s academic colleges and autonomous institutes.
Announcing the appointment of NTU faculty to the newly-created chairs, Prof Suresh said: “NTU Singapore continues to grow in global stature and impact as a result of the remarkable accomplishments of our faculty in research, education and innovation that benefit knowledge creation, industry and society. To recognise and celebrate our faculty accomplishments, I am delighted that we have been able to more than double the number of chairs available to date at NTU.”
New mechanisms for the creation of the named professorships were established by the President’s Council, in consultation with the Advancement and Development Committee of the NTU Board of Trustees, with nominations for named chair appointments gathered from a very competitive pool of highly accomplished faculty that were carefully evaluated by the Provost’s office.
“There are many more deserving candidates for term chairs at NTU than there are resources available to support named chair professorships. To address this issue, we are also continuing to strengthen and accelerate our efforts to raise gifts and matching endowment for named chair professorships,” he added.
The following are the 50 faculty members appointed to the newly-created named professorships and five others newly appointed to existing named professorships.
