National Day Awards honours dedicated service of NTU faculty and staff

In recognition of their contributions to education in Singapore and dedicated service to NTU, 100 University faculty and staff were presented with the National Day Awards this year.

NTU Deputy President and Provost Professor Ling San was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Gold).

Prof Ling said: “Throughout my years as an educator and academic leader, I have seen rapid changes that transformed the higher education space. Responding to these shifts required nimbleness to adapt and enable fresh new ways of learning. This has created an exciting and dynamic environment to pursue the University’s mission of nurturing leaders and creating societal impact through interdisciplinary education and research. The award is a tremendous honour that underscores the collective effort of the OneNTU community. I am thankful for the many colleagues and students I’ve worked and engaged with throughout my time in NTU, whose professionalism, curiosity and drive reaffirm my commitment to create a flourishing and innovative academic environment.”

Prof Ling San is a mathematician by training who joined NTU in 2005 as the Founding Head of the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences. He was appointed Provost in 2018.

Prof Ling is a member of the Committee of Government Scientific Advisors, Singapore and has also served as the Chief Scientific Advisor for the National Research Foundation, Singapore.

Also honoured in this year’s awards is NTU pro-chancellor Ms Jennie Chua, who received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). Ms Chua was recognised for her contributions in many fields of public service, from healthcare and the arts to education and international relations. Ms Chua was on NTU's board of trustees between 2006 and 2014, and was appointed pro-chancellor in 2017.

NTU faculty and staff are among the over 6,700 individuals recognised this year for their contributions to Singapore.
