PGDE Secondary (English Literature) Programme

The PGDE Literature programme offers a comprehensive overview of what it means to teach the subject in 21st century Singapore secondary classrooms. We explore how Literature provides creative, communicative, and analytical experiences that are vital to a student’s cognitive, aesthetic, ethical, and imaginative development. Over three core modules, the programme provides an understanding of the aims of the local Literature curriculum as well as global trends and issues in Literature curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. Students will develop a holistic understanding of what is involved in the teaching, planning and implementation of an effective Literature programme.

Course 1: QCR52B: Aims and Approaches to Teaching Literature
                                                                                                                         Weightage: 6 AUs (6 hours x 12 weeks = 72 hours)
This module prepares pre-service teachers for teaching in the secondary Literature classroom by (a) familiarizing them with the aims and objectives of Literature education in Singapore schools; (b) providing them with the pedagogical knowledge and skills to teaching poetry, prose, drama, and multimodal texts; (c) grounding them in theories underlying different critical, creative, and ethical approaches to teaching Literature; and (d) providing practical strategies to design well-structured, purposeful, and effective lesson plans.

Course 2: QCR52C: Literature Curriculum and Assessment Design
                                                                                                                                Weightage: 3 AUs (6 hours x 6 weeks = 36 hours)
This module introduces pre-service teachers to the principles and practices of Literature assessment with a view towards preparing pre-service teachers to design and execute meaningful assessments. The module will include (a) opportunities for learning about setting appropriate Literature assessments, both formative and summative; and (b) opportunities for marking essay scripts according to the syllabus band descriptors.

Course 3: QCR52A: Literature Reflection and Practice
                                                                                                                                 Weightage: 2 AUs (6 hours x 4 weeks = 24 hours)
The module provides opportunities for students to critique a variety of lesson plans as well as to enact, analyse, and reflect on a micro-teaching lesson conducted in class for the benefit of their peers.
