Synopsis:
AI is an important and arresting phenomenon that can change the way we live and work drastically. But how should we think about AI? Are there any ethical concerns? Should we be careful about assimilating AI into our lives? Is it a technology that can help us function better and enhance our experiences? Or does it carry within itself the seductive seeds of destruction, with the capacity to distort our relationships and personalities? Or is it simply a hallucinating idiot, pretending to be smarter than it really is, so that we are still a long way from its promises? In this talk, I want to share what the scholarly literature says about AI – its beneficial potential, its possible harms and also where it needs further development. Having a “broad-stroke” impression of these issues can be helpful for our own discerning embrace of AI.
