Assoc Prof Koh Koon Teck Publishes a Journal Article and Presents at an International Conference

Assoc Prof Koh Koon Teck, Head of the Physical Education & Sports Science Academic Group (PESS) at NIE, is Principal Investigator (PI) of the research project “A Study on the Implementation Status of the Physical Education (PE) 2014 Syllabus in Singapore Schools”. Based on research findings from this project, Assoc Prof Koh has published a journal article and given a presentation at an international conference.

The journal article, titled “Basic Psychological Need Profiles and Correlates in Physical Activity Participation: A Person-Centered Approach” was published in Frontiers in Psychology. The article was co-authored by Assoc Prof Koh’s co-PIs on the project, Prof Li Chunxiao from the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, South China Normal University, Mr Wong Liang Han and Ms Connie Yeo from the Physical, Sports and Outdoor Education Branch, Ministry of Education (Singapore) and PESS colleagues Prof John Wang, Assoc Prof Steven Tan, Mr Tan Shern Meng, and Mr Ang Wee Boon.

The paper details the investigation of associations between need satisfaction and need frustration in students during physical education lessons, guided by Basic Psychological Need Theory. They found that experiences of need satisfaction countered the negative effects of need frustration, enhancing their understanding of students’ psychological need experiences and highlighting the need to investigate the combined associations between need satisfaction and need frustration.

NIE staff/students can access the journal for free through the LIBRIS portal at https://login.libproxy.nie.edu.sg/login.

Assoc Prof Koh also presented at the 2021 International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP) Scientific Conference, held from 7 to 10 June 2021. The presentation, titled “Understanding the Process of Implementing Physical Education Syllabus in Singapore Schools”, discussed the main project study of how PE teachers interpreted and implemented the 2014 PE syllabus in achieving learning outcomes in Singapore schools, the factors that influenced syllabus implementation, and suggestions on how to enhance the effectiveness of syllabus implementation. Assoc Prof Koh presented with his project co-PIs Assoc Prof Tan, Mr Tan, and Mr Ang.
