Dr Kenneth Lim Yang Teck shares his work in an undergraduate elective at 2025 American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting
On 27 March 2025, Dr Lim Yang Teck Kenneth, Senior Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), shared a study which used a cartographically-focussed Generative AI agent at the 2025 American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting held at Detroit, Michigan. Dr Lim's work is pioneering in that it represents one of the first documented studies on the application of Generative AI not in text-based interactions but in the field of map literacy and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Together with Associate Professor Edward Park from the Humanities & Social Studies Education Academic Department, Dr Lim and his team member Mr Ahmed H Hilmy used 'Map Doctor' during AAG23H / AAG28E, which is an undergraduate elective introducing GIS. 'Map Doctor' is a Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute and trained by members of the International Cartographic Association Commission on Map Design. For Dr Lim's study, students of AAG23H / AAG28E used 'Map Doctor' during their weekly labs as they critically evaluated the suggestions offered by the AI agent on maps of their own design.
