Food

Food security and safety are global challenges and key national priorities in Singapore. To support the Singapore Government's "30 by 30" goal of locally producing one-third of its nutritional needs by 2030, NTU's Food Science and Technology programme (established in 2014) is advancing its educational and research capabilities. NTU has developed expertise in various areas including plant biology, health and nutrition, immunology, microbiomes, fermentation, synthetic biology, and food safety. These efforts align with national research focuses on primary food production, food processing technology, and nutrition.

To enhance its research capabilities, NTU has formed strategic partnerships with local and international institutions such as the Technological University of Munich, Wageningen University, Hebrew University, A*STAR, and the Singapore Food Agency. These collaborations have enabled NTU to secure funding for key initiatives, including hosting the Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) and the SG Agri Innovation Lab (SAIL) under the Singapore Food Story initiative. Additionally, NTU collaborates with the National Healthcare Group to promote community health through precision nutrition.

NTU provides a comprehensive environment in wide ranging capacities that are critical for tackling the challenge of Food security and safety, including significant expertise in areas ranging from Energy and Water to Policy as well as Industry engagement. Together these serve as a foundation that allows Food research to flourish and develop a research ecosystem that aims to tackle problems from basic understanding to developing industry relevant technologies and solution with a specific focus on Food Production, Food Nutrition, and Food Sustainability.
