FRX - X-ray Protein Crystal Diffraction System
The X-ray diffraction system at NISB uses the Rigaku FR-X Microfocus rotating anode generator coupled with VariMax-VHF optic and Dectris PILATUS3 R 300K HPAD detection system.
The Rigaku FR-X is an ultra high-intensity microfocus rotating anode X-ray generator that designed to be utilized in macromolecular structural biology and provides the highest usable X-ray flux. It provides brightness exceeding some second generation bending magnet synchrotron beamlines. Ideal for rapid screening of samples and for collection of the highest quality data for in-house. The PILATUS3 R 300K is one of the most advance Hybrid Pixel Array Detectors (HPADs) that perform direct detection of X-ray photon. Single-photon counting eliminates all detector noise and delivers superior data. Plus, the absence of readout noise and dark currents has become a strong benefit when collecting data with a home source. VariMax (Confocal X-ray Optical System) with monochromatic X-ray beam with adjustable divergence is capable to deliver higher flux, excellent spectral purity and uniform beam profile. This is very useful for the analysis of small and weakly diffracting crystals, and crystals with long unit cell lengths or the need for a specific wavelength for S-SAD phasing experiment.
