Meet our OEP student, Elvis Chua!

Elvis Chua, NTU EEE alumnus, Overseas Entrepreneurship Programme (OEP) in USA, January 2022

Our OEP (Jan 2022) student, Elvis Chua, shared how the six-month internship in Silicon Valley has bolstered his confidence in fund management and investments, a key aspect he hopes to pursue in his journey as an entrepreneur.

What kickstarted your interest in entrepreneurship?

My family has always been doing business ever since I was young. They have had businesses from construction to logistics.

How has your OEP experience been?

Great! It was an eye-opening experience as I got the opportunity to interact with start-ups from diverse industries and people from all around the world.

What insights have you gained from OEP?

Through the six-month internship, I have learnt how to evaluate start-ups for investment purposes from a venture capitalist perspective. I have also gained a more in-depth understanding of how an entrepreneurship
ecosystem in the US differs from one in Southeast Asia.

In addition, travelling on the weekends has shown me that the world beyond our shores is indeed much bigger. It is perfectly normal to take a road trip of 6 to 12 hours. Such a duration could bring us to Thailand!

What advice would you have for students interested in this field?

Go for OEP! It is a life changing experience.

What’s next for your journey as an entrepreneur?

I am interested in working in fund management such as GIC or family funds.

“Eye-opener. Great travels. Friendly environment.”
