Introduction

This course will equip students with an understanding of the role of physical activity and nutrition in preventing chronic non-communicable lifestyle diseases.

Issues related to measurement are covered before examining the evidence that physical activity and good nutrition can be used to prevent and treat a range of chronic lifestyle diseases.

Physical activity prescription and nutritional recommendations for the prevention of each disease will be examined. The course will use a range of methods to explore the evidence including lectures, laboratory work, tutorials, online learning, group work and presentations.

Learners need to complete any 3 of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Physical Activity and Health (12 AU). Upon completion of all courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Physical Activity and Health (16 AU).

At the end of the course, learners will be able to demonstrate understanding of the following concepts and applying the theories and research findings to enhance general well-being and health, through written assignment and verbal presentation:
• an understanding of the role of physical activity and nutrition in preventing chronic non-communicable lifestyle diseases.
• an understanding of measurement issues related to physical activity and energy expenditure.
• the ability to critically evaluate the evidence base related to the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases through lifestyle intervention.

This course is recommended for working professionals in the sports and fitness, and healthcare industry who would like to upskill their knowledge or for those who intend to work in the sports and fitness and healthcare industry. Prior knowledge in exercise and sport science will be an advantage.
