The School of Humanities at NTU is a dynamic, creative, and diverse community of scholars with research expertise in Art History, Chinese studies, Literature, Linguistics and Multilingual Studies, History and Philosophy. The School also encourages interdisciplinary research in the following areas: Medical Humanities, Green Humanities, Gender and Diversity Studies, Intercultural Contact and Communication, and Southeast Asian Studies.​

Postgraduate candidates will work closely with their supervisors; faculty members who come from a wide range of research interests and specialties. Candidates will work towards a thesis on an approved topic and also take courses. 

Graduates from the programmes will gain a solid background in research and applications. They will be fully equipped to have a career in research and teaching in world-class universities.

Postgraduate Disciplines

 

Art History

The Art History graduate programme welcomes applications to pursue critical research in modern and contemporary art histories, visual and material cultures. The programme’s strengths are in the East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia regions, particularly— though not limited to — the areas of exhibition histories, decolonization, performativity, transmediality, and experimental new media practices. We encourage cross-disciplinary and comparative proposals that will invigorate the broader field(s) of study. Learn more here​

Chinese

Graduate programme applications in the Chinese programme can pursue research in Chinese literature, language, history, Overseas Chinese and their languages, culture and history, and Singaporean-Malaysian Literature and Cultural Studies.  Learn more here​

English

The English graduate programme welcomes applications to pursue research in any area or period of literary study, especially those which speak to its strengths in Contemporary Literature, Modern Literature, Southeast Asian Literature, Literature & Medicine, Early-Modern Literature, and Irish Studies. Creative Writing projects in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, and screenwriting are also welcome. Learn more here

History

The graduate programme in History welcomes applications for MA and PhD degrees specializing in all regions and time periods. The programme has particular strengths in the histories of medicine, science and technology, as well as the histories of ancient, modern, and contemporary South and Southeast Asia. We also encourage projects that address any aspect of colonialism and decolonisation, religion, gender and sexuality, and environmental, heritage and applied history. Learn more here

Linguistics and Multilingual Studies

The graduate programme in Linguistics and Multilingual Studies is dedicated to producing postgraduates in linguistics who will be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more areas within the field. Candidates for the LMS programme can pursue research in the any of the key research areas: Language and Cognition, Documenting Endangered Languages and Culture, Investigating Conversational Interaction, Shifting Identities in Local and Global Interaction, and Computational Linguistics. Learn more here

Philosophy

The graduate programme in Philosophy invites applicants from a wide range of approaches and traditions in philosophy. The programme has particular strengths in Chinese Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, and Ethics and Political Philosophy. Research may be pursued within a particular tradition such as Chinese Philosophy or Anglo-American Philosophy, or from a comparative or interdisciplinary perspective. Learn more here

Interdisciplinary Research

SoH promotes interdisciplinary research, which is an exciting new area that involves collaborations between disciplines within the school. Our strategic interdisciplinary research clusters include areas such as Environmental Humanities, Medical Humanities, and more. Application and Intakes​

The application deadline for those seeking to matriculate for Semester 1 intake (August) is 15th December.  For those seeking to matriculate for Semester 2 intake (January) the deadline is 31st July.

The research programme can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time candidates with good results may be offered research scholarships.
