Spreading the Love of Film: English Major Daryl Cheong Builds Community of Moviemakers

Daryl was awarded the inaugural NTU Talent Scholarship for his contributions to society.

Daryl Cheong (Year 3, English), recipient of the inaugural NTU Talent Scholarship, is a multi-hyphenate. While juggling his studies as a Year 3 English student, he also produces films and works as a film critic. His love for the visual medium is so strong that he leases out a space in central Singapore to support other budding filmmakers in their collective dreams.

The President of the NTU Film Society organises monthly movie screenings, writes reviews and even acts in his own productions – honing a well-rounded skill set for his future endeavours. Through funds tirelessly earned from giving tuition, Daryl rents a cosy studio in Pearl’s Hill Terrace and decorated it to be a filmmaker’s dream with movie posters, screening lounge, outdoor studio, and more. He also took on Minors in Creative Writing and Entrepreneurship to build on his skills in order to write for the medium and start his own production company.

Ms Nikki Draper (Lecturer in Film studies, ADM) was full of praise for Daryl, saying that she has “met only a few students who deeply engage with the entire film community like he does.”
