What Goliath Can Learn From David : Big Lessons from Small Nations

A Book Launch In Singapore : Wednesday, 25 Sept 2024 @ EHL Campus (Singapore)

The launch of What Goliath Can Learn From David was a great success, highlighting the role of small nations in solving global challenges. The book, a collaboration between NTU School of Social Sciences, S8nations, and EHL Campus in Singapore, profiles 11 small countries that have pioneered innovative public policy in education, healthcare, and industrial development.

As noted by Professor Tommy Koh, author James Breiding challenges the belief that "bigger is better," showing how smaller nations excel in competitiveness, education, wealth, and social cohesion, positioning them for greater global influence.

James Breiding, the founder of S8nations and author of Swiss Made and Too Small to Fail, is a well-respected voice in international affairs, contributing to top-tier publications like The EconomistFinancial TimesForeign AffairsWall Street Journal, and New York Times. His latest work, What Goliath Can Learn From David, was celebrated in a vibrant discussion led by distinguished guests, including Ambassador-at-Large Professor Tommy Koh, former Head of Civil Service Mr. Lim Siong Guan, and CoHASS Dean, Professor Joseph Liow.

The panel discussion explored thought-provoking questions such as how smaller nations can uphold excellence when larger countries disregard international law and whether a clash of Asian and Western values could challenge Singapore’s leadership role globally. These discussions energized the audience and led to a lively exchange of ideas, which continued well into the dinner reception.

The collaboration between SSS@NTU and S8nations played a pivotal role in making this event possible, with SSS@NTU proudly supporting the launch. It also highlighted the significance of Singapore’s role in the book, further cementing its reputation as a global innovation and public policy leader. The event was particularly meaningful for SSS@NTU, as it highlighted the success of our alumni like Haikal Afiq, who interned with S8nations in Switzerland and contributed to the connection between the organizations.

In all, it was an evening of great importance, celebrating a book that not only sheds light on the vital role of small nations but also amplifies Singapore's contributions to the global discourse.
