Is Donald Trump really “pro-life”? Why US evangelicals need to broaden their concern for the sanctity of human life beyond abortion

In an op-ed,  NTU PPGA’s Assoc Prof Nilay Saiya, a Yang Visiting Scholar in World Christianity at Harvard Divinity School, writes that while evangelical support for Trump is motivated by a number of issues –  chief among them the sanctity of human life – Trump is anything but pro-life. In making the claim that Trump is pro-life, evangelicals point to the justices that Trump successfully nominated to the Supreme Court who provided the necessary votes to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 court decision legalising abortion in all states. These expectations, however, have not been met. According to the Guttmacher Institute, there were over one million abortions in the United States in 2023 — the highest number in more than a decade — and these figures do not include abortions that occurred outside of the formal health care system.
