In response to the US waiving some tariffs, Beijing urges Washington to correct its mistakes
In response to the U.S. decision to exempt imported electronic products such as smartphones, computers, and semiconductor chips from reciprocal tariffs, China called it a small correction and urged Washington to take a bigger step by fully cancelling the tariffs. Assoc Prof Li Mingjiang, from RSIS at NTU, analysed that the exemption of these goods signals a significant retreat in the Trump administration’s maximum pressure strategy and leaves room for future negotiation compromises. He also pointed out that while high-tech industries might partially shift production away from China, it is difficult for mid- to low-end manufacturing to return to the U.S. in the short term. Asst Prof Dylan Loh, from NTU's PPGA programme, concurred that while the U.S. aims to decouple its manufacturing from China, the practical challenges are substantial.
