World’s biggest chocolate maker making strides in cocoa production that are good for farmers, forests

Switzerland-based Barry Callebaut, which is the biggest chocolate maker globally, has recently been focused on infusing sustainability into its cocoa supply chain in the Ivory Coast, in the West African coast. It means smaller yields with better quality but likely higher prices. Asst Prof Chua Yeow Hwee, who teaches economics at NTU, said price remains the main concern for consumers in Singapore for groceries, “particularly in an environment with high inflation”. There is also a lack of consumer attention to sustainably produced chocolate in Singapore. One way to address this is to have an individual carbon scorecard, where individuals are linked to their carbon footprint to make choices of sustainable products more noticeable, he said.
