Conversation between Xi and Putin shows China-Russia relations are not affected by third parties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone on Monday, the day the Russia-Ukraine war marked three years. Both reiterated that China-Russia relations are strategic and not affected by third parties. NTU PPGA’s Asst Prof Dylan Loh said that Putin’s initiative to invite Xi to have a phone call is not only to assure Beijing that Russia-China relations will not be affected by Russian-US interaction and that China will not be marginalised by Russia-US negotiations, but also to show that Russia has not been isolated despite sanctions imposed by Western countries. The phone call also shows that Russia regards China as a very influential and important partner, and that China may play a certain role at the negotiation table in the future and in post-war reconstruction, said Prof Loh.
