Commentary: 'Not in my backyard' — when some groups can protest more loudly, the most vulnerable ones suffer

In the wake of some Mandai residents protesting the construction of a columbarium in the area, Asst Prof Shannon Ang from NTU and Asst Prof Tan Shin Bin from NUS said in a commentary that "not in my backyard" tendencies of property owners urging the Government against building dormitories, nursing homes or rental housing where they live can penalise the most vulnerable groups in society – such as foreign workers, senior citizens and low-income people – that rely on these developments but are less able to speak up for themselves. This reinforces problematic wealth inequalities that undermine meritocracy.
