Gaming addiction often brushed off as a lack of discipline, but it’s a far deeper problem

Experts say a gaming addiction often points to an underlying mental health condition such as depression. There is also a risk that excessive gaming may spiral more easily into a gambling addiction, as game developers refine their tactics to get gamers to spend more while playing. Dr Jeremy Sng, a lecturer at NTU, said that micro-transactions in video games such as buying loot boxes, which are digital goodie bags with rewards, may become more sophisticated and the psychological hook may be less obvious to players.
