Insights from the Webinar on Japan-ASEAN Relations

On October 11, 2024, the School of Social Sciences (SSS) hosted a thought-provoking webinar to commemorate 50 years of Japan-ASEAN relations. With the peace, stability, and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific in focus, this engaging discussion brought together experts from Japan, Southeast Asia, and beyond to explore the future of these ties from both historical and strategic perspectives.

The conversation was enriched by insights from Professor Taizo Miyagi's book, Japan's Quest for Stability in Southeast Asia.

The session was led by Assoc Prof Kei Koga, Head of Programme in the Public Policy & Global Affairs Programme at SSS@NTU, alongside our distinguished speakers:

  • Dr. Rory Medcalf, Head of the National Security College at ANU, who also serves on the Board of the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations and the ASEAN Regional Forum’s Register of Experts and Eminent Persons.
  • Ms. Sharon Seah, Senior Fellow and Coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre and the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute. With her extensive experience in Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Environment Agency, Ms. Seah brings valuable insights into regional policy.
