Many PAP candidates have potential; the number of new MPs appointed as civil servants may reach a new high
The People’s Action Party (PAP) will introduce over 30 new candidates in the upcoming general election, with many believed to have the potential for political appointments. Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from NTU SSS predicts that the new Cabinet after this election might include the largest number of newly elected MPs in Singapore’s history. He said this would give the Prime Minister more talents to consider when forming his leadership team, but also noted the challenge that these newcomers’ abilities have not been tested. He added that while these candidates may be outstanding civil servants, they may not necessarily be suited for political office, a situation that has occurred in the past. He also said that Prime Minister Wong is expected to select team members who have performed exceptionally in the public service or the private sector.
