NTU Sociology’s Impact: Inspiring a New Generation of Changemakers
NTU’s School of Social Sciences is proud to see the influence of our faculty’s work reach beyond academia and into the heart of public life.
Mr Kuan Perng Shun, newly introduced as one of the Workers’ Party candidates for Singapore’s upcoming General Election (GE2025), shared in an interview with The Straits Times that he was inspired to enter politics after reading This Is What Inequality Looks Like by NTU Sociologist Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn.
One particular line from the book stood out to him:
“I want my children better than me.”
As a father of three, Mr Kuan reflected:
“My family is my foundation, my inspiration and my motivation. While the idea of being better changes over time, Singaporean parents will always want the best for their children.”
Assoc Prof Teo’s widely-read book has played a pivotal role in bringing everyday experiences of inequality to public consciousness, moving minds and motivating action.
At NTU Social Sciences, we remain committed to producing research that informs, inspires, and makes a meaningful impact on society.
This is the power of NTU Sociology.
