Exploring the Future of Cities: A Visionary Contribution by Ross Cheung
NTU Student Feature
How do cities envision their futures, and what can these visions reveal about their present realities?
Our PhD student, Ross Cheung, has made a significant contribution to this important question with his article, ‘Journey to the Future: Temporal Imaginaries in Contemporary Dubai,’ recently published in Anthropology Today. In this compelling piece, Ross explores Dubai’s unique vision as a city of tomorrow, analysing how its iconic architecture, cultural narratives, and development projects collectively shape its temporal imaginaries.
Guided by his supervisor, Dr. Ian McGonigle, an accomplished anthropologist and Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Maynooth University, Ross’s work exemplifies cutting-edge research. Dr. McGonigle, also the author of Genomic Citizenship (MIT Press, 2021), a seminal work on the intersection of genomics and identity, has been an instrumental mentor in this exceptional collaboration.
Anthropology Today is an internationally recognized journal that bridges the gap between academic research and public discourse. It highlights groundbreaking studies that provide insight into the complex cultural, social, and political forces shaping our world.
