Tampines expected to witness multi-cornered fight for the first time

The situation in Tampines is expected to change in the next election, with the possibility of a multi-cornered fight involving up to three opposition parties. Political observer Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from NTU noted that the incident regarding a Facebook post by former nominated member of parliament Calvin Cheng about Gaza is likely to influence public perception of the ruling party. Based on his observations of netizens' reactions online, he added that the response by Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad, was not well received by segments of the Muslim community. Tampines GRC has been a PAP stronghold since it was formed in 1988 when the GRC system was introduced in Singapore. In 2023, Mr Masagos took over Ms Cheng Li Hui’s duties in Tampines East.
