Wang Yi and Rubio called on each other to "be careful"; analysts: important not to let personal feeling affect bilateral relations

New U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi clashed over the Taiwan issue in their first phone call. Rubio expressed "serious concern" about China's coercive actions toward Taiwan; Wang Yi said he hoped Rubio would "take care of himself." Asst Prof Dylan Loh from NTU’s from NTU’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs said that China’s sanction list does not prevent Rubio from talking to China. He believes that from a practical point of view, it is only a matter of time before China lifts the sanctions.
