​Explainer: How a scandal involving K-pop star Seungri is causing shockwaves around the world

As far as scandals involving South Korean celebrities go, the one involving former Big Bang member Seungri could possibly be the biggest yet. Seungri hails from Big Bang, one of the country’s biggest K-pop groups formed by YG Entertainment, one of the “big three” entertainment agencies in South Korea, alongside JYP Entertainment and SM Entertainment. “For the K-pop industry, the scandal is significant as it involves a member of Big Bang, the A-list K-pop group for the past decade,” said Asst Prof Liew Kai Khiun from NTU Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, who teaches classes on the Korean wave.
