Synopsis
This course is a BDE for any undergraduate student with an interest in the Hindi language, culture, study and work life, but with no prior knowledge of the language. LH5001 will teach students’ basic Hindi to the level of A1.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It introduces the basics of the language such as reading and writing of the Devanagari script and pronunciation. It then proceeds to basic communication, fundamentals of grammar, and elementary reading skills for simple sentences. Students will develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in an interactive and integrated manner through a broad range of classroom and online activities that relate to daily life such as greetings, personalities time, numbers, weather, location and day-to-day activities. This this course will be beneficial for student to travel, study and work in India

No previous knowledge of the language

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and write in Hindi script (Devanagari), sound proficiency of vowels and consonants 
  • Construct simple sentences and questions in response to basic everyday communicative situations such as yourself, your family, object, food and hobbies.
  • Apply appropriate vocabulary on a variety of contexts in daily life.
  • Describe places, location, dates, weather and time.
  • Write short written expressions in Devanagari using learned grammar and vocabulary about a familiar topic.
  • Identify information provided in simplified Hindi audio files.
  • Create and act a short role play.

Synopsis
This course is a BDE for any undergraduate student who already possess an introductory level of proficiency in the language equivalent to LH5001. LH5002 will teach you basic Hindi to the level of A1.2 according to the common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). In this course, you will further develop your proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing that relate to yourself such as health, food, shopping and travels. These skills will be taught in an interactive and integrated manner through theme based activities related to everyday life. By the end of this course you will have better understanding of Indian lifestyle and culture.

Learning Outcomes

  • Converse in variety of topics in the present, past and future tense.
  • Speak with sufficient fluency and accuracy on a range of familiar topics such as schedule, travels, giving directions and shopping.
  • Express simple opinions or requests in a familiar context.
  • Identify information provided in basic Hindi texts and audio files.
  • Write a coherent paragraph on familiar topics such as family, friends, health and aspiration in Hindi.
